Apple đang block ai
Từ tháng Một, app iOS của Replit kẹt cùng một version. Ranking tụt — first xuống second, rồi xuống third trong category Apple’s free developer tools.
Tháng Ba, The Information report chuyện gì đang xảy ra. Apple block update của một số AI coding apps, gồm Replit và Vibecode. Rule cited: App Store Review Guideline 2.5.2 — app phải self-contained trong bundle, không được “execute code which introduces or changes features or functionality”. Rule có từ nhiều năm trước, predates category software giờ đang được áp.
Theo report, Apple gần approve update Replit nếu công ty ngừng preview generated app trong iOS client và mở chúng trong Safari. Fix không phải “ngừng generate code”. Fix là “ngừng show generated thing inside reviewed thing”.
Một tuần sau, Apple escalate enforcement. Ngày 26/3, công ty pull luôn app Anything ra khỏi App Store, citing same rule. Co-founder Anything Dhruv Amin đã spend ba tháng trước đó cố gắng comply — submit bốn technical rewrite khác nhau theo feedback Apple. Attempt cuối làm chính xác điều Apple đề xuất với Replit: route generated app preview qua external web browser thay vì in-app web view. Apple reject update và remove existing version.
Mấy tháng sau, standoff vẫn chưa resolve.
Premise mà Apple đang bảo vệ
Take Apple’s position at its most charitable. Premise của App Store: artifact reviewed lúc submit = artifact chạy trên device user. Khi Replit display generated app inside embedded web view, Replit binary đã reviewed effectively chứa unbounded number of unreviewed apps. Wrapper được review. Contents thì không. Từ perspective Apple, review didn’t review anything.
Apple đã có complicated rules quanh interpreters, downloadable code, browsers within browsers, JavaScript-heavy apps suốt từ ngày App Store tồn tại. Mỗi round, runtime flexible hơn, platform owner draw lại line. Lines moved. Premise behind chúng thì không: software là thứ bạn có thể hold still đủ lâu để inspect.
Underneath question of motive là một real epistemological problem. Reviewer Apple không có method để evaluate software có behavior determined at runtime by a model. Existing review process không có gì để xem. Wrapper reviewable. Wrapper làm gì lúc 3 giờ sáng trên phone của user, sau khi user type prompt mà reviewer chưa từng thấy, thì không.
Reviewable artifact và running artifact không cùng kind of thing.
Cả stack distribution đang ngồi trên premise này
Không chỉ review. Hầu như mọi layer của modern software-distribution stack được build trên cùng premise.
- Version number giả định một canonical artifact với defined lineage
- Release notes giả định có release
- “Bạn đang on latest version chưa?” giả định có latest
- Bug report giả định hai user xem cùng software
- Documentation giả định screenshot sẽ match
- Reproducibility giả định binary không di chuyển trong khi bạn đang nhìn
Mọi thứ trong stack rest trên assumption rằng software, once shipped, hold still. App Store, package manager, versioning, CI/CD pipeline, support tooling, JIRA ticket, Stack Overflow answer — toàn bộ grammar của “chúng tôi shipped X trong version Y”.
Adaptive software không hold still. Mỗi user’s version drift khỏi mọi user khác — đôi khi ngay lập tức, đôi khi qua nhiều tuần. Bug không reproducible vì software produce bug không còn đó nữa. Không có “latest version” vì không có version. Hai user trên cùng product không thể compare notes về feature, vì feature được generate cho một và không cho người kia.
App Store premise luôn going to expire. Software hold still là temporary condition, không phải property. Nó hold still suốt 40 năm vì tools để make adaptive chưa tồn tại. Giờ tồn tại rồi.
App Store enforce assumption strict nhất, và kết quả là Apple bị forced ask question đầu tiên: review nghĩa là gì khi artifact và runtime không cùng thing? Phần còn lại của stack sẽ soon bị forced ask sau đó.
Trong khi đó, ChatGPT App Directory
While Apple đang bảo Replit ngừng show generated apps in-app, OpenAI đang build platform có entire premise rằng app generate themselves in-app.
Tháng 10/2025, OpenAI giới thiệu Apps SDK tại DevDay. Vài tháng sau, công ty open public submissions và launch app directory inside ChatGPT. Đầu 2026, directory hosted Spotify, Zillow, Canva, Coursera, Booking.com, Expedia, Adobe Photoshop, Gmail, Microsoft Teams, Stripe — và Replit. Cùng Replit đó. 800 triệu người dùng ChatGPT mỗi tuần. Có tools menu, directory, submission process, review queue. Essentially một app store.
Nhưng unit thì khác. ChatGPT apps không phải binary. Chúng là MCP server pair với web UI component mà model có thể render inline trong conversation. Model decide app nào surface dựa trên conversational context. Ví dụ OpenAI: nếu bạn mention buying a house, model có thể pull Zillow up inside chat. User không navigate tới Zillow. Model summon nó.
Discovery shift từ search sang inference. User không browse directory và pick app; model pick một và user accept hoặc không. App không có fixed UI. Nó có capabilities và components, composed turn by turn against whatever user đang trying to do.
Protocol underneath all this là Model Context Protocol — originally develop tại Anthropic, giờ adopted across industry. Cả ChatGPT apps và Claude connectors run trên MCP.
Cái ladder distribution
- App Store distribute binaries — rung thấp nhất
- ChatGPT directory distribute capabilities (MCP server + component) — một rung lên
- Next rung, chưa tồn tại at scale: distribution by intent — user express need, runtime compose fulfillment, cái travel giữa developer và user gần như constraint set hơn là program
Mỗi rung lên làm underlying software adaptive hơn và distribution model less compatible với App Store.
Đọc contrast giữa Apple và OpenAI là openness defeat control là wrong framing.
OpenAI vẫn gatekeep. Có review process. Có directory. App không meet quality và safety standards không vào được. Agentic Commerce Protocol (payments layer của OpenAI) đang beta với Stripe; some version of take-rate đang đến. Platform incentive port từ generation distribution này sang generation kế. 30% có thể không survive ở form hiện tại, nhưng gatekeeper-with-rents structure sẽ tìm shape mới.
Cái khác thật sự là kind of software model mới có thể hold. App Store có thể hold software không change. ChatGPT directory có thể hold software có change.
Contradiction trên cùng device
ChatGPT là app trên iOS. Đã đi qua review của Apple. Giờ đang distribute third-party software qua internal directory của riêng — theo cách run against spirit của rule mà Apple đang enforce với Replit. Contradiction đã ignore-able cho tới giờ vì ChatGPT directory nhỏ relative với App Store, và vì hầu hết surface là conversational chứ không phải visual.
Điều này likely sẽ không stay true.
Khi directory grow thành thứ thật sự compete với App Store như nơi user tìm và dùng software, reviewer Apple sẽ bị forced một decision:
- Apply 2.5.2 cho ChatGPT — restrict hoặc pull một trong những app dùng nhiều nhất thế giới — invite antitrust action, regulatory attention, public scrutiny chưa từng có với App Store policy nào
- Hoặc accept rằng rule chỉ apply khi runtime native, không apply khi mediated bởi language model run trên server của ai khác
Either resolution reshape platform balance.
Distribution đang dịch lên
OpenAI không phải company duy nhất bet rằng distribution moving up the stack.
- Apple Intelligence là attempt của Apple làm Siri-as-agent thành new distribution surface cho hardware của họ
- Gemini đang làm same trên Android
- Microsoft Copilot đang make same bet inside Windows và Office
- Phía browser: OpenAI Atlas, Perplexity Comet, Anthropic Claude in Chrome đang bet rằng agent inside browser là nơi user eventually do things, và whoever run agent đó run distribution
Whether new distribution layer sống ở OS, browser, hay chat — unit of distribution đang rising. Từ binary, lên capability, eventually tới something closer to intent. Whichever surface wins, binary loses standing.
Meanwhile, dev mà Apple put on hold không going quietly. Speaking tại StrictlyVC tuần này, CEO Replit Amjad Masad gọi reasoning của Apple là “a lie” và nói công ty của ông có thể prove trong court if necessary.
Reviewer Apple được trained để look at code. Category software họ giờ đang bị asked review không có code worth reading theo nghĩa truyền thống. Code chạy thì generate at moment of use, trên device user hoặc trên server somewhere, response cho request mà reviewer chưa từng thấy.
Artifact đã dissolved into runtime.
Someone tại Cupertino, fairly soon, sẽ phải write một memo về review nghĩa là gì khi không có gì static để inspect. Memo đó sẽ say một trong hai thứ:
- Tìm cách giữ assumption rằng software hold still — buy time but lose future
- Concede rằng artifact đã dissolved into runtime, và whole premise của App Store cần theory khác underneath
Author nghĩ memo thứ hai là cái cuối cùng được write. Question duy nhất là how many năm của memo đầu tiên đến trước.
The fight is not really between Apple and Replit. It’s between two theories of what software is.
